Swiss Pediatric Liver Center
If your child is diagnosed with a liver or biliary disease that requires further treatment, they will be referred to the Swiss Pediatric Liver Center in Geneva. The center is part of the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and cares for approximately 300 children and their families from all over Switzerland and some from abroad.
Since 1989, over 200 children have received liver transplants in Geneva. The survival rate is over 90%, one of the highest rates in Europe.
Professor Valérie McLin and Professor Barbara Wildhaber, along with their team, lead the Swiss Pediatric Liver Center with great dedication to their patients. Care is provided in an interdisciplinary manner, with collaboration from doctors, nursing staff, a nutritionist, psychologist, social worker, and other specialists.
The center works closely with the child's primary pediatrician and gastroenterologist. This brings the benefit that most medical check-ups can take place near the patient's home.
However, for more extensive check-ups or surgical procedures such as liver biopsies, a Kasai procedure, or a transplant, longer hospital stays in Geneva may be necessary.
Organizing such hospital stays can be a challenge for many families. Fortunately, affected families have the option to rent an apartment near the children's hospital at a very affordable rate or stay in one of the two Ronald McDonald Houses.
The APAEG (Association for the Support of the Child Transplanted and their Family) provides several apartments. The price varies depending on the length of stay, ranging between 15-30 CHF per night for the entire apartment, regardless of the number of people.
The two Ronald McDonald Houses are located close to the children's hospital. A night costs 40 CHF per room, with a rate of 20 CHF per night if staying for two or more nights.
